The Mark of a Man

Is the mark of a man really being tall, dark, and handsome?  I certainly hope not, seeing as I am short, pale, and homely.  But several years ago, we were told that the mark of a man was in the power of Old Spice cologne.  Society’s idea of what it means to be a man has not changed much over the years.  But I am thankful that what the world defines as manly is not what God defines as manly.  The true definition of a man can be seen in Titus 2:2.  There we read that men should be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.  A temperate man knows how to keep from going to extremes.  A dignified man knows the time and place to be serious.  A sensible man is thoughtful and self-controlled.  Real men should never stop growing in their faith in God.  Their love for God and for other people should grow as well.  Finally, this verse tells us that real men never give up.  Men shouldn’t compare themselves against the world’s standards.  They should compare themselves against God’s standards.  Men, when you look to God’s word, can you say that you bear the mark of a man?

It takes a real man to say, “… as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
