When Family Matters Most

From the Original Family to the Eternal Family

Family Matters

Family. The word alone evokes memories. For some the memory is a fond blessing from the Lord of a simpler time in the family which we were born into. For others it reminds them of a time of struggle, a time when family wasn’t so pleasant. Still yet, some think of their current family the one they are married into and creating or have created with their spouse. But family is a blessing from the Lord, regardless of what memories exist.

The Lord is the Creator of family. He designed it in such a way to be complete, a reflection of a spiritual family. He created a man (husband) to be the leader, a woman (wife) to be the helper and children to be trained up in His way so that they can grow and leave their mom and dad and be married starting their own family.

Genesis 2:24 (ESV)

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
Thus He created a perpetual (until the return of the Savior) renewing of family. The family structure is important. It is a beautiful union of lives meant to love, care for and support one another. Without family suitable companionship cannot be found.
Genesis 2:18-23 (ESV)

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit forhim.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formedvery beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

If companionship were suitable outside of marriage and the extension family, then God would not have needed to create the woman to be with the man. But God knew that man needed to be joined together in a companionship which leads to family.

Mere humans can’t truly explain the family dynamic. They have tried stating socioeconomic reasons, but the reality is without God’s design family simply would never sustain itself. It was God and through Him that family continues. In fact the Apostle Paul gives us one of those random little nuggets of information in his letter to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 3:14-16 (ESV)

14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,”

You see every family in heaven and on earth is named from the Father. Without Him family would not be and most certainly would not continue in a world filled with the god of self. Satan has no purpose for family, which is why he continually seeks to destroy it. Because when the earthly family is destroyed it makes the hope of eternal family seem impossible. But in a family that follows God’s design that perpetuates His will teaching and training the children in His nurture and love the family continues on leading toward the heavenly home to be reunited with the eternal family of God.

This month on the R16:16 blog we are exploring the Family Matters. We will take a look at various aspects of family from meal time to training up to family fun. Join us and let us know your thoughts on family.

I like that line, “because when the earthly family is destroyed it makes the hope of eternal family seem impossible.” I have seen that hope dimmed by sin in an earthly family. Thankfully I have also seen the heavenly family become everything to those same sad folks.
