Highlighted Youth Post

When Silence is Just
by Jayla Sparks at Marvelously Modest

Brotherhood Highlights | R16Sixteen.wordpress.com #R1616

To say that wisdom is coming from youth seems like an oxymoron, but the reality is when one is trained up in the nurture of God’s word, wisdom is learned young. That’s what Jayla presents in this blog post about being cautious with our mouth. She uses an excellent Biblical illustration to show that it’s best to think before you speak.

“I believe that this is an issue we often justify and don’t really like to touch. How many times do we mistake going to our brothers and sisters for help, with gossiping?” – Jayla Sparks

Sisters, this is a post you don’t want to miss. You will be uplifted, nudged and gently, lovingly reminded of the importance of our words.

New Series for Young Women in the Church

Highlighted New Series | R16Sixteen.wordpress.com #R1616

This new series Beyond the Foam on Come Fill Your Cup is geared toward young women in the Lord’s church it is written by young women but the goal is to help move beyond the milk of the word and learn how to study themselves into meatier topics.

“…Foam? Steamed milk foams wonderfully, and tastes amazing in coffee, a drink both of us are extremely fond of. However, were we to just live off of foamy milk, we would be undernourished, unhealthy, and seriously craving some Tex-Mex…

Here at “Beyond the Foam”, we are making it our goal to teach women in their teens and twenties the depths of Christ, getting past the milk and the “elementary doctrine” that we are so often given. It is our goal to dig deeper into the text and be a support and inspiration to those who crave more than just milk.”

–Jayla Sparks and Sarah Smith, Co-Editors of Beyond the Foam

Telling the Old Old Stories for Mature Members

Highlighted Podcast | R16Sixteen.wordpress.com #R1616

Not a Children’s Bible Story Series, at Radically Christian

In this podcast series the good brothers at Radically Christian are digging in to some common children’s Bible lessons to pull out deeper lessons for more mature members. These brothers are asking the question…

“What can mature disciples of Christ learn from this story?”

Seeking to move beyond the children’s corner of study and into mature, meat filling word.

Standing Firm in the Word

As we continue to be surrounded by a culture bent on destroying Christianity. It becomes harder and harder to speak the truth without controversy. Brotherhood News reported a story last week about Facebook censoring a post on the Facebook Community Page Added to the Church of Christ.

Standing Firm in the Word | R16Sixteen.wordpress.com #R1616

“Jamie Suiter reported today that on Mar. 12  the popular brotherhood Facebook Page, “Added to the church of Christ,” was asked to remove a post on homosexuality.  According to page editor Tony Brewer, they were told it classified as “hate speech” under the Facebook guidelines.”

With over 60,000 pageviews the original post obviously brought attention to the subject.

These brethren are working to administer the Facebook Page: Stephane Maillet, Tony Brewer,  and Paul Mays. We are thankful that they are standing firm in the faith. Please pray for their continued work.

Wireless Choice from Your Brother

Unlimited Business Plan = Unlimited Time and Financial Freedom

We live in the digital age. Everywhere we go, and nearly everyone we see, we are surrounded by cell phones, tablets and pc’s. Most families have at least one if not 4, 5 or more wireless devices. With those devices comes cost. The cost of purchasing the device but also the cost of the wireless plans which we use to operate them.

With those plans there are a myriad of choices. Wireless companies abound on every street corner and in every market in the country, as well as around the world. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could purchase your wireless plan while at the same time supporting a brother in the church? Wouldn’t it be even nicer if you could get your service for free? Imagine if you could tap into that vast wireless market and earn money yourself while at the same time using your own wireless service.

wireless market

Kenneth Wayne did imagine such options. That’s when he became both a customer, distributor and eventually a Regional Manager for Lightyear Wireless.

Lightyear Wireless  is a part of a larger publicly held company called Lightyear Network Solutions.  Lightyear began operations in 1993 in Louisville, Ky. In October 2010, Lightyear acquired South East Telephone further expanding their base of operations. Today, the company has operations in Louisville, Pikeville and Lexington, Kentucky. But they offer services through independent distributors, like Kenneth, across the country.

Through Kenneth’s website you can purchase wireless service plans, Be sure to ask Kenneth about their referral program which can earn you free service. Additionally, anyone who is interested can also become an independent distributor which not only allows one to receive free wireless service but can earn income as well.

Lightyear -2a

When asked to describe his business Kenneth says of Lightyear Wireless,

“People helping people have more time freedom for their family and all their loved ones and too give them better Financially Security.”

Countless of individuals are sick and tired of, being sick in tired of the rate race of corporate America, and not being able to enjoy time freedom with their family and all their loved ones.

Too many people work endless hours and, take on two jobs leaving them with no time for their kids, wife and friends. I have personally seen families get divorced all because they became “Work Alcoholics”.

Ask yourself; is working two jobs and, working endless hours worth all of that just to be able to meet your family’s needs?

Imagine owning your own business with unlimited monthly earnings and being able to do what you really enjoy. (Which is…) spending quality time with your family and friends, not to mention, not having to be concerned about the money because you will also be financially secure.

Kenneth seeking to find financial security and freedom of time while offering a product at reasonable he rates operates his website as an independent distributor. Whether you are in the market to change your wireless plan or to start your own business as a wireless independent distributor you can reach Kenneth via his website: http://kennethwayne.mylightyear.com

Just Me-2

Kenneth Wayne is a member of the church and worships with the congregation in Whitehouse Texas. He loves helping people and enjoys spending time with family. Kenneth says, “One of my favorite quotes is, “People Helping People”. By working together as a team, both parties will be able to achieve their goals and dreams in life.

Beauty of Artistry

Blessed with Wisdom of Heart

artistic blessing

Beautiful art can cause a myriad of reactions. It can evoke joy, fear, sorrow and tears. For those who have a heart for creating beautiful art they often share their emotions through artistic expressions. Our Lord blesses each of his people with talents and asks that we honor Him with those talents. For some, those talents present in the ability to lead others in song, or serve in benevolent ways. Others He grants the ability to give and still others the ability to create. Children especially are able to express their hearts through artistic expression.

Pablo Picasso said,

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

Artistry can be found in a wide variety of mediums and be presented in many in everything from home decor to clothing design, photography to woven art. In scripture we see artists throughout the building of the temple. These are seen in the work of craftsmen, jewelers, goldsmiths, weavers, engravers, carvers, embroiderers, stone cutters and more.

Exodus 35:34-35

“Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any work, and of those that devise cunning work.”

The virtuous woman covered herself with tapestry, of silk and purple.

Dorcas expressed her love through sewing of clothes for the poor.

Lydia was a seller of purple cloth.

Amanda Hilburn paints beauty on canvas, pillows, mugs and more. Using her talents to express God’s word, love and beauty in creative and artistic ways.

Amanda's Art

She sells her wares to help support her family through her Etsy shop, Art by Amanda. She offers customized and original works of art, acrylic paintings. Amanda also loves interacting with her clients and she does so through her facebook page. She shares there images of her latest works and even makes suggestions of items she can make and customize to the specifications of her clients. You can read more about how and what Amanda creates on her blog Art by Amanda.

Amanda’s art is both fun and inviting. She works in a modern folk art kind of way where she adds multiple mediums to items, utilizing text, paint and bits and baubles to enhance her designs. Whether it’s a painted pillow or a canvas for above the heart, her art brings an inviting feel to any home.

Amanda HilburnAmanda is married to Jason Hilburn who is the minister for the Nesbit church of Christ in Nesbit, Mississippi. They have two children. Our daughter, Katelynne, is 13 years old, and our son, Braden, is 11 years old.

Feathering the Family Nest

Local Business Creates Warmth and Comfort from Old to New

Nest Feathers 1

When I think of keeping the home and making it a place of comfort, sustenance, and beauty, my mind immediately goes to the virtuous wife of Proverbs 31. She was an amazing woman who could not only meet the immediate needs of her household, but somehow (in her spare time) was somewhat of a business woman.

“She also rises while it is yet night,
And provides food for her household,
And a portion for her maidservants.She considers a field and buys it;
From her profits she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength,
And strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good,
And her lamp does not go out by night. She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hand holds the spindle.”

This is also a description of an amazing woman that I am blessed to call my friend. She is the real deal when it comes to multi-tasking and doing it extremely well. Her family rises up to call her blessed and so do her friends. I was honored to interview Tonya Strong about her business. I think you will find her responses both interesting and insightful.

Why did you choose the name “Nest Feathers” for your business?

I chose the name of my business, , based on my love of the concept of feathering our nests for and with our families. Many years ago, during a difficult time of loss, I read a book about appreciating your children and the feathers (tangible and intangible memories) that they leave behind in your nest. That stuck with me and so when picking a name, there was no question.

Nest Feathers

Where is Nest Feathers located?

I have two booths, located upstairs, in Vintage Rose Antiques. The store is located in the historic District of Cookeville, Tennessee at 221 West Broad, formerly known as Putnam House.

What does your business specialize in?

I specialize in antique to mid-century modern painted, repurposed, up-cycled and/or reclaimed furniture and accessories.

Why did you start Nest Feathers?

I began trying my hand at painted furniture with a dear friend a few years ago. While the concept took off quickly, being homeschool moms, we could never find adequate time to keep up with the demands of finding pieces, painting them, marketing them and developing the business. Since then however, I have been overwhelmingly encouraged and generously supported by the new owners of Vintage Rose Antiques, who are also dear friends, to try again and rent booth space. I needed a way to supplement income for our upcoming life events and I am always seeking a creative outlet, so after much prayer, I decided to give it another try.

Nest Feathers 2

What are the pros and cons of being a small business owner?

  • Pros:

Supplemental income, creative outlet, travel, my husband and kids have gotten involved.

  • Cons:

Creates very chaotic times that sometimes take me away from my family, travel, never ending dust and disorder

What is your goal for Nest Feathers?

My goal is to develop it and enjoy it until I don’t anymore and never let it separate me from God or family!

What advice would you give someone considering starting a small business?

If you are a Christian wife and mother considering going in to business, I suggest that you heavily weigh the pros and cons of time spent away from family. I have spent countless regretful hours miserable and working in the garage, while my family was together in the living room. Once you make commitments to others, you must fulfill them. Keep in mind that like Nest Feathers, most part time industry is ultimately a producer of vain products (lusts of the eyes). The proverbs 31 woman, who bought, sold and worked with her hands to create profitable merchandise, was certainly glorified for it, but at the same time, her family and household were preserved. Enjoy what you aim to do and use it to help your family but never let it come between you and God or your family.

What else would you like us to know?

I wish that people would understand that you can buy wonderful, sturdy old pieces of furniture that were made in the USA, by skilled craftsman, that will retain their value and have much character and history at a fraction of the price of today’s new cookie cutter furniture, shipped from china, with poor craftsmanship and that loses most of its value as soon as it passes your doorway. At the same time you are supporting local people like me who are trying to pay for a wedding, put their children through school, buy soccer shoes, make a house payment and not for a conglomerate CEO’s 5th vacation home. Shop local!

As many of you can very well relate, “home wasn’t built in a day.”A home is a work in progress that needs layers of love added over time just like the mama bird feathers her nest one feather at a time. Nest Feathers, and other businesses that have unique, one of a kind items, help make feathering our own nests much easier, and allow us to support our brothers and sisters in Christ at the same time. After all , there is no place like home, especially one that is “feathered” in love!

strong familyTonya Strong is the wife of Ronald Strong and the mother of Brettianee and Hannah. She homeschooled her daughters from Kindergarten to Senior year. Not only has she started a business, she also is a cofounder and board member of PAJCH, a homeschool group that supports and caters to members of the church. She and her family worship at the Center Grove church of Christ where her husband is an associate minister and deacon.
